Engines build up sludge over time from the by-products of combustion mixed with old burnt oil.  Sludge is a black tarry substance which leaves baked-on deposits on the working surfaces of your engine and blocks oil-ways, eventually starving them of lubrication and, in the worst case, causing engine failure ("black death").  To illustrate just what sludge can do to your engine, click on this link through to Subdriven Forum. The causes of sludge are varied:  hard, fast driving leading to high under-bonnet-temperatures combined with the use of mineral oils; lack of maintenance, particularly failure to change the engine oil within 20000 miles; city driving - stop/go starting; an abundance of cold starts/short runs; engine overheating. Some makes and models of car seem to be more prone to it than others. 

If your engine has been poorly maintained, cleaning it with a mild flushing agent will release all this sludge which will get caught in the oil filter.  Change the filter when you fill up with fresh oil.   Discard the oil filter.  Fill to the correct level with a good quality motor oil of a type recommended for your car and fuel type, and fit a new oil filter.  

Ametech RESTORE Motor Cleaner is easy to use.  It contains lubricants to protect your engine, while the flushing agents (one of which is Kerosene - highly effective as an oil dispersant and cleaner) do their work.  Put it in with the engine with the existing engine oil and run the engine with the car stationary for 15 minutes - that's all it takes.

Directions:
Before changing oil, pour 1 bottle into the crankcase with the old oil. With the vehicle stationary, let the engine run for 15 minutes, alternatively at low and high rpm. Change oil. Replace the oil filter.
Fill the crankcase up again with fresh quality oil.

Dosage:
One bottle (250ml) treats a crankcase (engine size) of 3 to 6 litres.
