How Battery Restorer Works

Battery Restorer is a non-acid chemical formula which breaks down deadly sulphation corrosion that has formed on plates and insulators and restores normal action in the cells. The chemicals in Battery Restorer are safe for all new and used lead acid batteries. It has an indefinite shelf life and is unconditionally guaranteed to restore, improve and prolong the life of mechanically sound lead-acid batteries regardless of age, make or size.

Lead acid batteries are basically small power plants that store chemical energy in clean plate materials. They are made up of plates, lead, lead oxide and various other elements that are used to change density, hardness, porosity etc. These lead acid batteries are chemically charges with pure sulphuric acid (35%) and pure distilled water (65%). This solution is called electrolyte which causes a chemical reaction that produces electrons.

The sulphuric acid enters the clean plate pores causing a normal chemical reaction. A soft spongy film called lead sulphate forms on the negative plates. When you test a battery with a hydrometer you are measuring the amount of sulphuric acid in the electrolyte. If your reading is low, that means the chemistry that makes electrons is lacking. So where did the sulphur go? It is resting on the outside of the battery plates and when you recharge the battery, this sulphur returns to the electrolyte.

When lead acid batteries are left sitting even in only partial discharge state, they begin to sulphate. This sulphation begins when sulphur molecules in the electrolyte (battery acid) begin to coat the battery's plates. In a very short time, these lead sulphate crystals turn abnormally hard and clog the plates. Sulphuric acid cannot enter the pores and the battery starves to death.

Battery Restorer will restore the normal action in the cells of these mechanically sound batteries (mechanically sound meaning batteries that still barely work and that do not have a cracked, broken or collapsed plate or connection) by breaking down, dissolving and keeping hard crystallised sulphation from forming again. Battery Restorer will increase battery life, increase power efficiency, reduce battery failure, keep PbO2 soft and spongy, will strengthen lead plate components, eliminate resistance by up to 50% and will restore sulphated mechanically sound batteries regardless of age, make or size and is 100% guaranteed.

About Battery Equalization

An equalized charge is often defined as a controlled overcharge. This is a true 100% full charge of the battery bank. Check each cell voltage with a hand held digital voltmeter and compare readings of all the cells of the bank so that you can tell how equal all the cells are. Cells voltages should all read within .05 volts of each other for batteries at rest (no charging or discharging happening). For example, the highest reading may be 2.15 volts and the lowest reading may be 2.10 volts. If cells vary by more than this, then you should charge the batteries until all cells read within .05 volts of each other.

If the battery bank consists of 6-volt or 12-volt batteries that do not allow you to take voltage readings of each individual 2-volt cell and you do not have an All Cell Digital Tester then checking each cell with a battery hydrometer is the only way to be absolutely sure that the batteries are equalized. Each cell is fully charged at or about 1.270 points specific gravity on a temperature compensated battery hydrometer. This reading may actually vary slightly due to manufacturers' different specs for various battery types. Some batteries may be fully charged at 1.260 specific gravity. Equalized cells will all be fully charged and all within 0.010 points specific gravity of each other.

Unequal cells, as measured by specific gravity with a battery hydrometer, are a normal fact of battery life especially with deep cycle batteries. Over several charge/discharge cycles the individual 2-volt cells (3 per each 6 volt battery) drift apart in voltage and the only way to bring them all back to an equal state of charge is to overcharge the entire battery bank until the cells lowest in charge catch up with the other cells. Cells that are in a low state of charge will begin to sulphate, that is the lead sulphate on the plates stays there because it is not driven off during a complete recharging of that cell. The longer the sulphate stays on the battery plate the more crystallized and hard it becomes making it more difficult to get it off the plates and back into the electrolyte solution. Sulphation on the plates means less plate area for the electro-chemical process to take place, which results in reduced storage capacity.

Battery equalization works if the battery is not too heavily sulphated, but if it is, there is the risk of creating too much heat which would result in shedding some active material from the plates, warping them and ultimately destroying the battery. Battery Restorer added to the sulphated cells breaks up hard sulphation and allows the battery to charge back up much faster with much less heat, therefore preserving the integrity of the battery.

INSTRUCTIONS

Before adding Battery Restorer shake the bottle well to mix up the ingredients (this is very important). AVOID CONTACT WITH METAL AS THIS COULD NEUTRALIZE THE CHEMICAL.

  1. If possible charge the battery first and add Battery Restorer when battery is fully charged and is in need of water, to reduce the need for acid removal. If you need to remove acid, use a hydrometer and save the liquid in a non-metallic receptacle to be added back to the battery later if needed..
  2. Battery Shield Oil should be added first. This will prevent excessive gassing and fumes during the de-sulphation process and the risk of explosion.
  3. Add the exact amount of Battery Restorer according to quantity chart below or as stated on the bottle. CAUTION: Adding too much Battery Restorer may raise the voltage, possibly resulting in damage to your battery.
  4. After adding Battery Restorer, charge the battery at 10 amps or less for the first charge.
  5. After that, cycle (cycle meaning discharge and charge) the battery at least 4 to 5 times for maximum removal of lead sulphate crystals. After the 5th cycle the fluid should be about 1/8” below the bottom of the vent tube well. In certain circumstances some acid may need to be removed.
  6. If you have a 12-volt battery that is below 12-volts, say 11-volts, or a 6-volt battery that is below 6-volts, say 5-volts, then charge at 2 amps. Note: charging at this low amperage may take days to bring these heavily sulphated batteries back

If after cycling and charging at this low amperage, the battery is still not charging up fully, then charge at a much higher rate so that the voltage will reach over 15 volts (12 volt battery) while on charge. Note that the battery might start to heat up, but this is what must be done. Do not let the battery get over 125º while on charge. If it gets this hot, then stop and let cool, then discharge and charge again. After several times of doing this your battery will start taking more of a charge & discharge each time until all or most of the sulphation is driven off the plates.

If your 12-volt battery is below 11-volts or your 6-volt battery below 5-volts, then it may be best to just replace the batteries. Battery Restorer works every time in any mechanically sound battery.

HOW MUCH BATTERY RESTORER DO I USE?

Use the quantities given in the following chart according to the size and type of your battery.

Battery Restorer - Quantity Chart
Battery Type
Oz per cell
Motorcycle batteries ¼ oz
U1 and Lawn Mower batteries ½ oz
12 Volt Car, Truck, Marine, RV, etc. 1 oz
4D Industrial batteries 2 oz
8D Industrial batteries 2 ½ oz
6 Volt Golf Buggy, Aerial batteries 2 oz
8 Volt Golf Buggy batteries 1 ½ oz
6TN-6TL Military batteries 1 oz
J250-J305 batteries 2 oz
L-16 batteries 3 oz

If your battery is not listed on the bottle or the quantity chart, there is a simple way to figure out how much is needed per cell or battery:

The dosage of Battery Restorer required goes by the weight of the battery. The calculation for a 12-volt battery is the battery weight x 2.5, then divide by 6 because it has 6 cells, then divide by 30.

Let's say you have a 12-volt battery that weighs 65 lbs. In this case we take 65 lbs times 2.5 = 162.5, then we divide that by 6 because it has 6 cells, so that equals 27.08, then divide that by 30 = 0.90, rounded up to 1.0, means about 1 oz Battery Restorer per cell is needed.

Other Examples:
A 6-volt battery is weight x 2.5 then divide by 3 because it has 3 cells then divide that by 30.
A 24-volt battery is weight x 2.5 then divide by 12 because it has 12 cells then divide that by 30.
A 36-volt battery is weight x 2.5 then divide by 18 because it has 18 cells then divide that by 30.
A 48-volt battery is weight x 2.5 then divide by 24 because it has 24 cells then divide that by 30.

About cycling (charging and discharging) your battery

The successful use of Battery Restorer requires the charging and discharging of your battery several times. It may take many charge and discharge cycles to revive your battery, but each successive time you do this Battery Restorer drives more of the lead sulphate crystallisation off the plates until the battery is back to full strength. All mechanically sound batteries respond to Battery Restorer eventually, so please persevere with the process.

Some good quality battery chargers do have a discharge facility, but some do not. If yours is one of these, you can use a 12 volt inspection lamp hooked up to the battery to discharge the battery in between charging cycles. You will know when the battery power is fully discharged because the lamp will no longer shine.
